Space in all its varieties is an economic commodity, and a scarce commodity at that. Therefore optimum management of space, or in space, is one of the prime targets of planning and decision-making activity.

As a dynamically developing discipline, spatial economy has worked out several model solutions that provide a basis for spatial development plans and projects, including those prepared as part of the European Spatial Planning Observation Network (ESPON).

While the flow of theoretical solutions to planning takes place in Poland too, there has been no forum so far for a regular exchange of opinions and experiences between the planning/decision-making circles of various levels and academia. In fact, there is no such forum at the international level either.

Hence, the chief aim of the conference is to provide an opportunity for a survey of theoretical and practical achievements (made on a yearly basis) in order to strengthen the link between the theory and practice of planning, and to work out optimum solutions to concrete needs reported by local governments of various levels.
